stripey scarf

what, some knitting content? i have been knitting more than i have been posting about knitting, actually.

the yarn i used for this scarf was actually the first yarn i purchased for my first project. it was a very very long crocheted scarf. since it was my first project, the edges were rather "organic", since i added and dropped stitches throughout the project. it was a charming enough scarf, but it sat in the closet unworn. largely because when one wears a very long scarf and then finds oneself indoors, there is now a big mass of fabric to remove from one's neck and find a place to put along with all the other bulky winter accessories.

i was taken enough with this pattern that i harvested the yarn from the first project and remade it into this:

knit hats and 5 months

nathaniel is 5 months old today. it really is crazy how time passes. i have enjoyed the hints of cooler weather and the promise of being able too dress him up in hand knits. i can't say i love being up for feedings in the chilly night air, though! i think i will like it more when it's colder - enough to warrant fires in the fireplace to keep us toasty.

recent visits & craftiness

this post is going to serve as somewhat of a photodump for various recent events. we had friends from texas visit, we went to brooklyn to hear friends from texas do a brunch gig, and i finally not only finished some sewing & knitting, but photographed the projects as well.

the pictures do a better job of explaining

let me just say that i am so happy our friend vanessa caught such a great family shot of us. it's a first good trio picture!

knits for nathaniel

it was a good memorial day weekend. we set up an outdoor movie screen at our house (screen courtesy of the university AV dumpster, projector was a hand-me-down from a friend) and invited some friends over. it was great fun and we would like to do it again sometime. sorry i didn't take pictures of the movie set up, but take my word for it that it was cool.

one friend who came for the event brought us this awesome hat for nathaniel, made by his mom. the stripey pants were a gift from [info]scubatoeeimi, who brought them from guatemala.

hard to believe the little man is 6 weeks old today. we are doing well and figuring out sleeping/eating quantities (or trying to, anyway).

oh yeah, i knit him something )

corn! and some sweaters

i finally have some pictures of all the things i've knit for munchkin so far.

PICT7839.jpg

several projects behind the cut )

oh yeah, i recently gave in and signed up for ravelry. not suprisingly, my username is "dabblersupreme". for any other knitters or crocheters out there, i recommend it; even if you don't feel like obsessively cataloging your own projects, there are a lot of great ways to search out others' projects and find tips, examples, finished objects, patterns, etc.

as a result of cataloging my projects on ravelry, i have created a new flickr account solely for my knits. if you're interested, take note of the new flickr id: dabblersupremeknits.

well, well, well, what have we here. yep, yet another knitting project.

duo + beret

i know, you're thinking - wait, didn't you say a mere 2 posts ago that you were retiring from knitting for other people's kidlings? well, this is different. i have my own munchkin-in-progress to knit for now. estimated due date: april 3.

knitting catch-up

ah, it's been a long spring/summer/leading into fall. lots of changes, as you know. after the wedding, thee household shifted a bit: our housemate moved out, and the TV and computers were his. it took us a while to get a new computer (we are now proud MAC users) and the photo archiving thing became a limbo/transition thing.

so here is a backlog of my most prolific crafty endeavor: knitting

robot

7 projects, including robot, under the cut )

in other news: i am retiring (or taking a looooooooooong hiatus) from knitting for other people's kidlings. if you didn't make the cut, my sincere apologies :)

toys

i've been trying to remind myself, when knitting gifts for children, that little ones often care more for toys than clothes. armed with that thought and an arsenal of cool patterns found in jess hutch's booklet Unusual Toys for You to Knit and Enjoy, i made a cupcake and a snake.

my first knitting pattern: Adam

i made this toy ant several months ago now, but i didn't post any pictures because one of the stipulations of submitting the pattern to Knitty is that the pattern & pictures be internet-posting-virgins. i got the rejection this week, so i thought i'd post it here instead. i also plan to send it in to the island of misfit patterns.

ant 045

my friend stacey from my knitting group was kind enough to test-knit my pattern and bring her ant by for a picnic photo-shoot. the ant i made is the purely red ant, but i sent it off to the intended recipient in a rush (the baby was already born and i didn't want to stall).

more pictures of the ants can be found in this flickr photo set.

FO: hot lava cardigan

i know that i haven't posted too much knitting recently, apart from the blanket that i recently finished. there's one pattern i can't share because i want to submit, and a whole slew of things i've almost finished and then cast aside. i'm working on the details (embroidery, duplicate stitch, and other stuff that's more fiddly than the actual knitting) and will share that too.

but now, behold a rarity: i knit something for myself!
hot lava cardigan 001

i know i look funny in pictures. and i slouch something awful. and the zipper of my trousers looks like it's gonna pop.

but, i think this is the first picture i've posted of myself since i got my new glasses. my old frames where almost identical to dan's, and we joked that it made us look like missionaries (because on our first trip to mexico, ohhhhh.... 10 years ago, the border agent kept grilling us: "are you missionaries"? perhaps we sorta dress and look alike, at least to a foreigner?)

also perhaps interesting to note: i am loving brown. this yarn was brown, my new frames are brown, and the yarn lined up for my next sweater is brown.

knitting - blanket and submission idea

ever wondered what happened to this work in progress?

well, i can finally share pictures, as the recipient has received the baby blanket. this blanket may look very familiar, as i made another collaborative one with friends for another new mother earlier this year.

in other knitting news, i have something i've been working on to submit to knitty! i just heard back from the designer whose piece inspired mine, and she gave me the go-ahead, which means she didn't find it similar enough to be stepping on her toes. and then, serendipitously enough, i see that the december issue of knitty is planned to concentrate on last minute knits and gifts. perfect! sorry to deprive you of pictures or more information, but it's a submission rule that it can't be seen on a blog before.

shoes again, knitting & tv

I know you're waiting with bated breath to hear what I decided about the shoes. Well … I ordered the Dansko ones, and was notified that they're on back order. I know I could get them elsewhere, but it would be a little more money. Anyway, I started nosing around at shoes again, and I stumbled across these Born shoes in "frog". And I ordered them. Zappos has a great return policy, so if the heel turns out to be too tall, I'll send them back (hey - free shipping on returns!). So, my need for practical black shoes has morphed into frog green shoes. I think I can get the color to work, though, and I also discovered some black mary janes in my closet that I've only worn a handful of times. Why? Because they have a heel, and I usually can't be arsed to wear heels all day. However, these are a good solid chunky heel, so I'm attempting to revive them. If I end up nixing the green ones, my very fashion-forward sister will be visiting next week, so I'm sure we can do some shoe-shopping.

In other news, last night I spent far too much time trying to pick out a provisional cast-on on a panel for a collaborative blanket. The panel in question was done by a friend, and she didn't have a contrasting yarn, so she used the same yarn. It.was.so.frustrating! Next time, I would just pick up stitches along that edge, but I was feeling stubborn and determined. Actually, next time I should suggest she use anything she can get her hands on: string, floss, twine …

Anyway, I indulged in some guilty-pleasure tv while I was working on this: Degrassi. I've actually gotten quite sucked in to Degrassi, the Next Generation, and I realized that I love how we're given updates on the adults who were kids during the original Degrassi (which I used to watch way back when). And, just in case anyone is interested or shares my guilty pleasure, you can find episodes here.

knitting for babes

these were mentioned in my last post, but i wanted to log the details for reference.

pattern: in Simple Knits for Little Cherubs, by Erica Knight.
yarn: artyarns supermerino (superwash wool) in 2 different colorways. same yarn i used for ian's earflap hat in this post.
needles: size 6 dpns
notes: i converted the pattern to be knit in the round, changed the ribbing to 3x3 instead of 1x1, and used sl2psso instead of k3tog for the decreases. the pattern calls for stripes made from different solid yarns, but i used a self-striping yarn for the main portion.

catch-up

things have been busy of late. i'm really glad LJ came out with that handy new toolbar where i can read only the journals on my friends-page, because there's no way i can keep up with the communities i'm in as of late.

last weekend, the crafty beavers came over. we made microscope slide pins/necklaces/magnets, but we were highly distracted because ann brought her beaverling, eliza:

we also relaxed in our lovely back yard:

more of what i've been up to )

we're headed to texas in a few days for the kerrville folk festival. during that time, we'll be camping and swimming and drinking beer and blissfully away from the internet. see you in about 2 weeks.

clicking on any of the photos will bring you to the point in the flickr set where the rest of the photos are, if you want to see more.

eye pillows and finished bunny

i've been making these aromatherapy eye pillows for gifts ever since december/the holidays, but i finally got around to taking some photos of a recent batch. plus, they're for non-LJ-reading friends, so i can post them without ruiining the surprise, as they will be going out in the mail shortly.
