toys
i've been trying to remind myself, when knitting gifts for children, that little ones often care more for toys than clothes. armed with that thought and an arsenal of cool patterns found in jess hutch's booklet Unusual Toys for You to Knit and Enjoy, i made a cupcake and a snake.

snake & cupcake 009

birds' eye view:
snake & cupcake 002

cupcake pattern: this, but slightly modified (top is in stockinette)
yarn: knitpicks shine sport
needles: size 3 and 2 dpns

snake pattern: from Jess Hutch's abovementioned booklet
yarn: knitpicks shine sport for the green, and a similarly-contented yarn i got in a swap for the orange (i forget the brand)
needles: size 3 and 2 dpns
eyes: felt

so ... the cupcake was intended for Baby Yasmin, and the snake for her older brother Kamar. i received this report from their mom:

ar actually was with me when we opened the box (he LOVES presents so was happy to just have it arrived) and as soon as I opened it he ran over with both the cupcake and the snake to give them to 'baby', as he calls her. Later, he retrieved the cupcake and tosses is about like a ball ;-)

i actually am rather pleased that they decided to switch up which item was for whom.

.... and .... here's a robot i just put the finishing touches on. i look like a total spaz in the pictures, but you see the robot is pretty gloriously 80's colored.

I think it's really cool (and refreshing) how you make so many cool things from scratch. People spend a fortune on toys that don't have any of the life or charm of these. And for the kids, they're pretty much guaranteed to have the only one on the block :-)

aw, thanks. yeah, i'm using patterns, but the yarn & colors i choose do indeed make these one of a kind. one of the only non-friend blogs i read (mypapercrane) is that of a woman who makes really cool plush toys. if i didn't have such a do it yourself ethic, i would be buying toys from people like her.

They're so great! I love hearing about your knitting projects.

Last night we met for knitting and I just got so fed up with this yoga tank from Knitty that I was working on. It was just SO HUGE. So...I ripped it all out. And I feel good about it. Now, I still have my precious green yarn AND I can start something new, which is always fun.

oooooh, i think i contemplated making the yoga tank for my sister, but she never responded to my query when i sent her the link, so i didn't bother.

the cool thing about knitting is that you can reclaim your materials when the project doesn't work out. it is indeed cathartic. are you gonna try again with adjustments or go for something different?

I know! I love that at least I can use the green for something else. It's a really pretty merino. I'm going to start a new project with a chunky yarn, though. I'm going to pick something out after work. The pattern is one that I found on crafster.org. It's a short sleeve, short sweater that can be closed with a brooch!
